Palanquin
Palanquin, also known as palki (the term originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Palanki’ for a bed), is a human powered mode of transport which developed and evolved through ages in many forms across the globe . This wheel-less vehicle is known in different names in different countries like palki or पालकी (India), পালকি (Bangladesh), lectica (ancient Rome), palanquin (France, India), tahtırevan (Turkey). Oldest mention of Palanquins is found in Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic.
Once the most celebrated mode of transport of kings and queens, Palanquin is no more in use these days. The age old heritage, with its lucrative past, is still a gem in the collector’s gallery.
